GEORGE ORWELL "ANIMAL FARM"

THE BRIEF

For my Advanced Higher Art and Design portfolio I chose to design a set for the theatre adaptation of the book "Animal Farm."

I decided to take the themes from the book and place them in a courtroom setting still with influences from the farm.

I wanted the set to contain a number of set pieces which remained on stage at all times with other pieces added to show a different scene.

It took me a year to research, design and complete the model.

CONSTRUCTION

The model is made from balsa wood, card and cloth.

The model shows each scene in the play featuring key moments.

It begins on the farm with one main court bench and two fences which separates the humans, as leaders, and the animals. There is also a barn cloth to reference the farm.

The main court bench remains on stage at all times to show the character that uses it as the one in power.

In the next scene a new backdrop is added to reveal the list of rules the animals must follow.

A lighting change and the addition of two new court benches now indicates the pigs are taking over.

There also features a change in backdrop as the rules have been changed.

As the lighting changes to red it shows the abuse of power and the ruling of the pigs.

The change in backdrop and addition of bricks introduces a new scene, and key point in the play, building the windmill. At the same time the fences which have remained on stage are moving closer to the front of the stage, creating more separation between the pigs and the other animals.

For the final scene all three court benches remain on stage for the pigs.

The fences keep the separation between the pigs and the other animals.

The windmill backdrop remains on as this signifies the most powerful moment for the pigs, highlighting the power they still have.
