ZIPPO LIGHTER

THE BRIEF

As my first project in second year in college I was asked to create a scaled up sectional model of a modern, technically operated product.

I decided to recreate an upscaled Zippo lighter.

The materials used are styrene, acrylic, blue foam and MDF.

It took two months to make and finish the model.

This model was displayed at the 2017 Craftex Exhibition in Glasgow.

CONSTRUCTION

The main shells have been made from layered styrene which has been moulded on the vacuum former.

Smaller parts such as wheels and pipes were made from acrylic cut from the laser cutter.

The outer shell was painted a bright yellow on the outside and brass on the inside.

I then printed and glued the skull design to the front with a glossy finish.

PAINTING AND FINISHING

The inner shell and smaller details were painted a variety of colours to look like metal before the white painted blue foam and cotton was added.

A glossy black MDF base was added with clear acrylic stands for support. A name plaque and platform for the original product was also added.
